Traveling with Dr. Holly: Tips for Staying Well on the Go!

Hey everyone! Dr. Holly here!

Lately, I’ve had so many of you tell me about your upcoming travel plans — road trips, flights, beach escapes, and adventures galore! Summer is the time to get out and explore, and honestly, I’m here for it. (Let me live vicariously through your travels, please!)

But — while travel is good for the soul, it can be a little tough on the body, especially when you’re sitting for long periods. Whether you’re flying across the country or road-tripping through the Midwest, one thing we need to talk about is venous stasis. It’s a fancy term that means your blood isn’t circulating properly — it’s pooling in the lower parts of your body, especially your legs. Not fun.

The good news? A few simple tips can help keep your body feeling great while you’re on the go:

Dr. Holly’s Travel Tips for Healthy Circulation

Wear loose, comfy clothes and shoes – Skip the tight jeans. You’re not on a runway.
Move those legs! – Flex your ankles, wiggle your toes, do little leg lifts.
Squeeze + release – Contract and relax your calf muscles, glutes, and core throughout your trip.
Breathe deeply – Helps oxygenate your system and relieve stress.
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate – Drink lots of water and maybe skip that second airport cocktail.
Take breaks – Stand, stretch, and walk the aisle (or stop at the next rest area and do a quick lap!).

Why do all this? Because when blood pools in the legs, it increases the risk of things like vein obstruction or even blood clots. And ain’t nobody got time for that during vacation.

Oh! And one last thing before I go…

What did one pig say to the other?
“Don’t go bacon my heart.”
(I had to. You know I love a good pun.)

If you’re heading out soon, safe travels! And remember — when you get back, your body might need a little extra love. Whether it’s a chiropractic adjustment, acupuncture session, or a relaxing massage, we’ve got you covered at Hulsebus Chiropractic.
